I was fortunate this year to be a part of the annual celebration of the United Nations International Day of Peace held at UN headquarters in New York, NY.? As a member of the Jane Goodall Institute’s youth board, several of my colleagues and I were honored to join Dr. Goodall for a day of recognition of the accomplishments the UN and our global society are making towards a more peaceful world.
The ceremony included international dignitaries, celebrities, and youth who gathered in the UN General Assembly Hall. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, several Nobel Peace Prize Laureates and official UN Messengers of Peace including Dr. Jane, Leonardo DiCaprio. Stevie Wonder, and Master of Ceremonies -Michael Douglas.? They spoke about the importance of the day, how it recognizes peace around the world, and about new initiatives that are at work to make our world a more peaceful place.
Realizing how diligently so many people around the world are working to raise awareness of important issues on a global scale makes one feel optimistic about a more peaceful future.? Just as important was the energy and enthusiasm youth from all over the world brought to the table.
